Happy 20th Birthday!
Wow what an incredible 20 years! We have hosted some great events, met some incredible people and have had a fantastic time in doing so.
On the 27 March 1998, the Conference Centre, previously known as the Glamorgan Business Centre (affectionately called GBC for short!), was officially opened by Dr Kim Howells M.P.
Rob Mathews was the original Centre Manger responsible for selling the venue concept even before the building work began, during the period where the former crèche site was being transformed into the Glamorgan Business Centre. Rob’s original team, comprising of Phil Cooke, Gill Giles, Elaine Kempster and Gemma Savage, worked very differently in the early days, before technology and sustainability took off, recording all bookings in a paper diary with a paper folder, where catering requirements were faxed through to the building behind. Clipboards were an office essential, with records and information for each event and day.
During our 20 years we have seen 3 Vice-Chancellors in post, the expansion into Cardiff with the ATRiuM, a merger with the University of Wales Newport, and the latest developments at the Sports Park. Along the way we have welcomed other colleagues into the family including Claire Watkins, Julie Jones, Sandra Dicker, Joanne Phillips, Kelly Morgan, Katherine Whitbourn-Hammond and Catherine Hooper, to name just a few. All of whom have played a part in our journey along with a number of placements adding to their student experience.
Following the centre management under Phil Cooke, Gemma Savage took over the reigns in 2006 where the role has since evolved to Conference & Events Services Manager covering a wide portfolio of venues and events all across the South East Wales regions of Pontypridd, Cardiff and Newport. Conference and Events Services are a non-subsidised department within the University. We are self-funding and responsible for generating a contribution that is reinvested into the USW Student Experience. In the last 9 years we have generated an income of 5 Million pounds.
