During the 22nd – 25th July 2013 the University’s Treforest campus played hosted to TUCO’s Annual Conference which saw 334 guests attend the event. The campus proved the ideal venue for the large conference as all facilities are located in such close proximity.
The conference was themed around sustainability with speakers such as Jane Davidson in her role as Director of INSPIRE at Trinity & St. David, environmentalist Charles Secrett from the ACT! Alliance, Rich Neumann of NACUFS (TUCO’s American equivalent) and Rob Rees, MBE – also known as The Cotswold Chef. Over 100 delegates attended the 3 day conference that took place within the year-round Conference Centre, accommpanied by over 200 exhibitors. A total of over 300 guests staying at our Mountain Halls accommodation on site and dining at our Stilts catering venue.
The Sports Hall on the Treforest campus was converted into an exhibition hall accommodating over 67 supplier stands utilising all the 805m2 space. Exhibitors included Matthew Clark wines, Brakes, Starbucks and Campus Life, with stands featuring the lasts in catering equipment, food and beverage.
The conference began with an unusual team building, ice-breaker session led by the incredible Sing & Inspire with delegates mastering Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now! The singing continued with the legendary Max Boyce as the special guest in the impressive Student’s Union building that evening. Day 2 concluded with guests collected by coach and taken on a guided tour over the Caerphilly Mountains with breathtaking views of Cardiff appearing over the horizon. Arriving at Cardiff Castle, the 300+ guests used all three venues in the Castle where they enjoyed a traditional Welsh banquet and entertainment. The final evening of the Conference was the Reception and Gala Dinner, hosted within our Glamorgan Marquee on site which was dressed for the occasion. Treating guests to an impressive 4 course Welsh themed menu created by our in-house Catering Team, entertainment was provided by a harpist, pianist with the grand finale performance from Treorchy Male Voice Choir.
The USW Conference & Events Team, led by Helen Anzani (Catering Services Manager) and Gemma Savage (Conference & Events Manager) managed the conference from beginning to end:
- Arranging all key note speakers and workshop presenters, including travel arrangements.
- Each element of the social programme: transport, venue hire, entertainment and accommodation.
- Delegate registrations: collating delegate data, receiving and receipting payments, distributing joining instructions and dealing with all queries.
- Event marketing was also carried out including the design of a stand-alone website, banner stand, Facebook page, Twitter profile and promotion of the event hash tag, producing a conference brochure and designing adverts / editorial for the organisation’s publication.
Just some of the comments received from attendees……
It was all very well planned and executed with excellent academic and social programmes. The facilities were great; the food really delicious and wonderful staff did everything to make it all a great pleasure. Liz Thomas, Head of Catering – London School of Economics and Political Science
The social programme was simply wonderful, culminating in the gala dinner with the best menu, entertainment and smiliest staff I personally have ever seen at a TUCO event. Tim Burrows | Operations Manager | University of Kent
Thanks for a brilliant conference – I enjoyed every minute of it but particular highlights were the benchmarking session, Cardiff Castle and of course the Treorchy Male Voice Choir – fabulous!
