Host Venue for Supporting Police Officers involved in the Security Operation
The University of South Wales (USW) worked alongside the Operations Logistics Team headed by Gwent & South Wales Police Forces to provide accommodation and catering for over 1600 officers across its facilities in South Wales (Newport City, Caerleon and Pontypridd). Working with a number of providers, comparable and standardised packages were created across the board to ensure Police Officers from around the UK were well looked after during their 10-12 days away from home.
The challenges faced were: the scale of the operation – accommodating over 1600 Police officers over a 12 day operation at three separate sites! In total we provided over 25000 meals and over 8500 bednights. Communication was key, ensuring we provided the same high standard of service to the officers at each site. Additionally, with this being the largest police security operation the UK has witnessed, information at times was limited and therefore flexibility on a daily basis was paramount.
POST EVENT VERDICT
The feedback from all of the organisers and visitors has been extremely positive, with high praise given to USW for its facilities, catering and first class customer service. Many officers expressed that they would be returning with their families and friends to enjoy all that Wales has to offer. The Warm Welsh Welcome certainly played a part in this. Feedback received from the Police Operations’ logistics team praised USW staff for their friendly and professional manner, “your fabulous work ethic and understanding during the event played a big part in what was a difficult and testing time for all of us. Your organisational skills were exceptional and the friendly easy going manner of the staff made our lives so much easier. We couldn`t have done what we did, and achieved what we achieved, without your help and hard work.”
WERE YOU SAD IT WAS OVER ?
We all felt very proud and privileged to have been involved. It was great for staff morale – we felt that our role was very important in the bigger picture and was key to the event delivery. We will no doubt keep looking back on this as one of our greatest events, with fond memories!
Following the departure of all officers we were straight into our Graduation Awards Ceremonies at Caerleon and preparing to welcome our new and returning students across all campuses. ‘Normal life’ has resumed for the Conference & Events department with increased business levels within its year round Conference Centre at Treforest, Pontypridd and at the facilities offered at Newport City and the ATRiuM, Cardiff. We’re also working on key residential conferences taking place for Summer 2015 – 2017, many of which are using our Event Management Package. An exciting time for us!
